A 40-year-old woman was brutally murdered by her husband during their visit to Kumbh, media reports said.
The 48-year-old accused man, Ashok Kumar, from Delhi's Trilokpuri was not on good terms with his wife, Meenakshi, over his alleged extramarital affair and thus hatched a conspiracy to get to Kumbh and kill her,a report in NDTV said.
The accused worked as a sanitation worker with Delhi Nagar Nigam.
The sequence of events
The couple came to Prayagraj from Delhi on February 17 to take a Kumbh tour. The accused also posted pictures of the couple on social media while at Kumbh.
According to a TOI report quoting a police official, the couple rented a room in Jhunsi, however, did not submit their ID proofs there.
The very next morning, the body of the woman was found lying in the bathroom, and her husband was missing.
The report further added that to cover his role in the crime, he went to the police station and lodged a missing person's report.
The father told his two sons, Ashwani and Adarsh, that their mother went missing in the Kumbh Mela.
Upon finding the dead body, the police sent her body for post-mortem.
They also launched an investigation, started gathering evidence and circulated her pictures on social media as well as published in newspapers.
This is when her brother Pravesh Kumar, along with her two sons, travelled to Prayagraj and confirmed her identity to the police.
The accused, after being apprehended, confessed that he got into an altercation with his wife following which he slit her throat with a knife and escaped after dumping the blood-stained clothes and the murder weapon into a dustbin at the mela area.
The publication further added that Ashok was booked for murder as well as for tampering evidence.
The accused has been hatching a conspiracy to kill his wife for three months, reports added.
