Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday accused his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee of ‘giving a free hand to the rioters’ in her state and said that Bengal was ‘burning’ but Mamata was ‘silent’.

‘’Bengal is burning but the chief minister is silent.....she calls the rioters shanti-doot (peacemakers),’’ Adityanath said while addressing a public meeting at Hardoi, about 125 kilometres from here.

He said that the Bengal government had given a free hand to the rioters. ‘’Murshidabad has been burning for a week...such anarchy must be checked,’’ he added.

‘’Laton ke bhoot baaton se kahan manege’’ (the rioters need to be dealt with sticks, they will not be persuaded by talks), the chief minister remarked.

Adityanath said that those who liked Bangladesh should go there. ‘’Such people should go to Bangladesh instead of becoming a burden for us,’’ he said.

Barely a couple of days back Adityanath had said that the Hindus, who were being targeted in Bengal as well as in Bangladesh were ‘dalits’.

‘’Hindus were dragged out from their homes in Murshidabad and killed.....who are these victims?.....these are dalits and deprived Hindus, who stand to gain the most from the amended Waqf Act,’’ he had said.

The chief minister said that the amended Waqf Act would prevent land grabbing and free large tracts of land in the state.

‘’The state government will build hospitals on the vacated lands,’’ he added.
