Lucknow: Twenty three people were killed and dozens others injured in multiple road mishaps reportedly caused by dense fog across Uttar Pradesh.
At least 13 people were killed on the Delhi-Agra Expressway after multiple vehicles collided in the wee hours on Tuesday amid a thick fog near Baldev area in Mathura district, according to the police sources here.
Police said that seven buses and two cars were involved in the mishap which happened around 3.30 in the morning. The vehicles caught fire after collision trapping the people inside them. Some passengers in the buses were charred to death.
It took several hours for the fire tenders to extinguish the leaping flames, sources said.
Mathura divisional commissioner Shailendra Kumar Singh said that four bodies have so far been identified. Eye witnesses said that visibility was almost zero at the time of the mishap.
Sources said that 13 people died in the mishap while more than 100 others were injured. The injured were admitted to hospitals in Mathura and CHC, Baldev. Critically injured passengers were rushed to Agra Medical College Hospital.
The number of dead could increase as many of the injured were stated to be critical.
The district administration has released helpline numbers to provide information about the incident.
In another accident, four people were killed after their vehicle hit a boulder in Bangarmau area on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Unnao district on Tuesday morning amid dense fog.
Four passengers were killed and 20 others injured when the bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck in Sant Kabirnagar district at midnight on Monday.
Two police constables were killed when their vehicle fell off the bridge on Hindon river in Meerut district late on Monday night amid thick fog.
