Police said that the bodies of the victims were stuffed in a sac and hidden in a bed box at their residence in Sohel Garden locality of the town. The family members had not been seen by the neighbours since Wednesday.

Police officials said in Meerut that preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were murdered with a machine used to cut stones. ‘’It seems that the murderers were more than one,’’ said a police official. The bodies were found on Thursday night.

Sources quoting the police officials said that the throats of all the victims were slit before they were packed into plastic bags and dumped in the bed box.

The deceased included Moinuddin, his wife and their three children aged eight, four and one year respectively.

The victims hailed from Roorkee district in the neighbouring Uttarakhand and had recently shifted to Meerut. Moinuddin had bought a piece of land in the locality and had started constructing his house around a month back.

Police suspect that a family dispute may be behind the killings. A case was registered in this regard and two persons were detained for questioning, the police said. One named youth in the FIR was missing and a hunt was launched to nab him.

The murders triggered panic in the area and security personnel were deployed there as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
