Lucknow: The Kumbhs have had a history of stampedes and in the past also many such incidents had happened during the event killing many devotees.
Here is a look at such similar incidents from the past.
At the then Allahabad (now Prayagraj), more than 800 devotees were killed in a stampede during the shahi snan (royal bath) on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya on February 3, 1954. Though the reasons behind the tragedy, according to the reports, it happened when the devotees got into the procession of the Naga sadhus, who then tried to scare them away with their trident.
In 1986, around 200 devotees were killed in a stampede at the Kumbh at Haridwar in Uttarakhand.
Around 39 people were killed and more than one hundred injured in a stampede at the Kumbh at Nashik in Maharashtra held on the bank of the Godavari river in 2003.
In 2013, 42 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede after a foot bridge collapsed at the Allahabad Railway station on February 10 during the Kumbh.
30 devotees were killed and 60 others injured in the stampede at the Mahakumbh on January 29, 2025.
