The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sought response from the Uttar Pradesh government, Prayagraj Mela Authority and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UP PCB) over alleged inadequate sanitation facilities at the Maha Kumbh Mela, leading to open defecation along the banks of Ganga river, Bar and Bench reported on Saturday.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on Tuesday had informed the NGT that the quality of Ganga and Yamuna water at the Maha Kumbh is not of bathing quality with very high level of faecal coliform, an outcome of sewage contamination of the rivers.

CPCB had examined the water quality of the two rivers for two continuous weeks.
