New Delhi: Police on Tuesday arrested more than 160 protesting farmers, including the president of Bharatiya Kisan Parishad Sukhbir Khalifa, who were holding a sit-in at the 'Dalit Prerna Sthal' in Noida.
The farmers were staging protest after police prevented them from marching to Delhi.
Among the arrested were women and several farmer leaders like Khalifa and Pawan Khatana, the state president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Western Uttar Pradesh), according to the police.
Farmers brought along mattresses, blankets, utensils, and other cooking items, indicating their intention to prolong the protest.
Slamming the arrest of farmers, the Bharatiya Kisan Union led by Naresh Tikait has called a panchayat in Muzaffarnagar.
The farmers, who have been demanding higher compensation in return for land acquired from them by the three authorities in Noida – eventually held a sit-in protest near Dalit Prerna Sthal on Monday.
Several farmers organisations announced march towards Delhi coincidence with on going winter session of Parliament pressing for fulfilling number of demands including a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
