Lucknow: ‘’Being bald is no fun,’’ said American actress Maura Tierney but the methods adopted by the people, bald of course, to treat it may be funny.

The streets of Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut town, about 450 kilometres from here, witnessed the funny side of the baldness treatment when hundreds of people made a beeline before some apparent quacks, who claimed to have a ‘miracle oil', which, if applied, resulted in re-growth of hair.

The scene was reminiscent of a song in the classic Guru Dutt starrer Hindi movie Pyasa, sung by legendary singer Mohammed Rafi and filmed on famous comedian Johnny Walkar- ‘’tel mera hai muski, ganj rahe na khushki’’ (my oil does miracles, there will be no baldness after it is applied).

According to reports, an advertisement appeared in some newspapers in Meerut in which some people claimed to have the ‘miracle oil' and asked the people to come to a banquet hall in Lisadi Gate area in the town on Sunday and Monday to buy the same.

Two persons, who had come from Delhi, applied the oil on heads (bald) of the people and gave them oil bottles for Rs 300.

Reports said that within a short time thousands of oil bottles were sold. There was a traffic jam on the roads near the banquet hall.

According to reports, such a large crowd turned up for the ‘miracle oil' that the organisers had to introduce a token system. Many people, who were partly bald, got their heads shaved as they were told that the oil would be applied only on heads with no hair.

The local officials said that they had no information about the matter but were looking into the same. ‘’We are looking into the matter and will take necessary action,’’ said an official in Meerut on Tuesday.
