Lucknow: Former Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday met the family of the dalit teen, who was allegedly gang-raped and had later died at a hospital during treatment four years back, in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district.
Rahul, who was accompanied by the senior leaders of Congress’ district unit, spoke to the members of the victim’s family for around 40 minutes at their residence at Bulgarhi village in the district and left for Delhi without speaking to the waiting scribes.
Although neither the local Congress leader nor the members of the victim’s family revealed the content of the discussion, sources said that the family had sent a letter to Rahul stating that the UP government had not fulfilled the promises it had made to them following the incident, which had triggered a nationwide outrage in 2020.
The father of the victim said in the letter that the state government had promised to give a job to one member of the family and a house but both the promises were yet to be fulfilled.
He asked Rahul to take up the matter and ensure that justice was done to the family, sources added.
The dalit teen was allegedly gang-raped in September 2020. She was admitted to a hospital in Delhi but died a few days later during treatment. The case was handed over to the CBI, which had filed a charge-sheet against four persons.
Three persons were later acquitted by the trial court while the fourth one was sentenced under the SC/ST Act and was currently in jail.
UP deputy chief minister Brijesh Pathak slammed the LoP for visiting the family of the victim saying that Rahul wanted to disturb peace in the state. ‘’Rahul Gandhi is frustrated ... .the case was handed over to CBI….the matter is in the court,’’ he said.
