Lucknow: Taking a serious view of the permission granted to the Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders to meet the accused in the violence which had rocked Sambhal during a court ordered survey of a mosque in which four people were killed and scores others injured, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday suspended two senior jail officials.

According to the official sources, Vikram Singh Yadav and Praveen Singh, the jailor and deputy jailor of the Moradabad district jail respectively, were suspended after it was found that they did not follow the rules while allowing the SP leaders to meet the violence accused who were lodged there.

Action was also recommended against the Moradabad district jail superintendent P P Singh. Sources said that since Sambhal did not have a district jail, the accused were lodged in the Moradabad district jail.

SP MLA Nawabjan Choudhary, former party MP S T Hasan and some other SP leaders had met the accused people in the district jail on Monday.

The SP leaders later, speaking to the reporters, had said that the accused persons complained that they were tortured by the police.

Four people were killed and several others, including cops, injured when a mob pelted stones and torched vehicles in the town, last week during a court ordered survey of the mosque after some Hindu plaintiffs claimed that the mosque had been constructed after demolishing a temple during the Mughal period.
