Lucknow: Two devotees died and 38 others were injured in a stampede at Ausaneshwar Temple in Barabanki district in the wee hours of Monday.
This comes a day after eight devotees were killed in a stampede at the famous Mansa Devi Temple at Haridwar in Uttarakhand,
According to the police sources here, the stampede occurred when the devotees started running for safety after a live wire fell on a tin shed leaking the current.
Several devotees including women fell as the people trampled one another in a bid to get out of the temple premises.
There had been a huge rush of devotees at the temple since Sunday night as the devotees made a beeline to offer water at the Shiva Temple on the third Monday of the Hindu month of Shravana.
Sources said that seven of the injured were stated to be critical and were referred to a higher centre for treatment.
Officials launched the rescue operations almost immediately as ambulances rushed the injured to the nearby hospitals.
A probe was ordered into the incident. ‘’It will be investigated as to how the live wire fell on the tin shed,’’ said an official.
Eye witness accounts said that the live wire fell on the tin shed after some monkeys jumped on to it and as a result it snapped and fell on the tin shed, which was erected to protect the devotees from the Sun.
Eight devotees were killed and over 30 others injured in a stampede at the Mansa Devi Temple at Haridwar on Sunday morning.
