Hemant Jain, a resident of UP’s Firozabad town, who had bought one of the shops in the auction in 2001, got the registration of the property done in his favour a few days back.

Jain said that he had bought a 144 square feet shop, which was owned by Dawood, who was the mastermind behind the 1993 Mumbai terror attacks and was believed to be living in Karachi town in Pakistan, in an auction from the Income Tax department for Rs two lakh.

‘’I made a bid to buy the shop, which was situated in a narrow lane in Jayraj Bhai street, after I read in a newspaper that Dawood’s properties were not getting buyers,’’ 55-year old Jain said.

He said that he had to wage a long battle to get the ownership rights of the shop after buying it in auction. ‘’The IT officials did not cooperate initially.....I had to write many letters to the PMO seeking its intervention in the matter,’’ he added.

Jain said that the file pertaining to the property was not available with the Registrar’s office forcing him to approach the court. He had to make rounds of the IT office and the Mumbai police to get the ownership right without success.

He said that he would be travelling to Mumbai to take physical possession of the shop next month.
