Rai has been informed that his programme should be postponed, keeping in mind the peace and communal sensitivity in the district. He was asked to cooperate in public interest, the agency said.

Rai with a Congress delegation was slated to visit today, but the district administration there has extended prohibitory orders barring outside entry till December 10.

A delegation of Samajwadi Party presidents were prevented by authorities from reaching the spot, sparking a row.

Violence erupted in Sambhal when a survey team reached to see if a temple existed at a spot where a mosque now stands, based on a petitioner's claim. Four people lost their lives as protesters clashed with cops.
