According to the police sources here, the man, identified as Ish Mohammed, slit his throat at his residence in Udhopur village in the district on Saturday morning after offering ‘Nmamaz’ (prayer).

He was rushed to the medical college hospital in Gorakhpur, where he succumbed to his injuries late on Saturday evening, the police said.

Sixty-year-old Mohammed left a letter before slitting his throat, in which he said that the people look after the goats like their children and then sacrificed them. ‘’Goats are also living beings,’’ he wrote in the letter.

‘’I am going to give my qurbani (sacrifice) in the name of Allah (the almighty)...No one has killed me....don’t panic on my death,’’ he further wrote in the letter.

Mohammed’s wife Hazra Khatoon said that the former was a devout Muslim and frequently visited the mazar (tomb) of Sultan Syed Maqdoom Ashraf Shah at Kichaucha Sharif in Ambedkar Nagar district.

‘’He had returned from there on Friday, a day before the Eid festival,’’ she said.

She said that her husband went to the nearby mosque to offer the prayers on Saturday morning.

Khatoon said that she heard the groans of her husband a little later. ‘’I saw him lying in a pool of blood in the hut when I reached there,’’ she said. A knife used in chopping the mutton lay beside him, she said.

Police said that Mohammed had slit his throat and died of excessive bleeding a few hours later in the hospital.
