The 63-year-old Congress leader was a former general secretary of the party and had distinguished herself as a good organiser.
She was elected president of the Indian National Trade Union Congress’ women’s committee in 2000.
Mercy Ravi was born to a Christian family in Ernakulam and her political leanings brought her closer to Ravi. They fell in love and after eight years of courtship, got married in 1969.
She was elected legislator from the Kottayam constituency in 2001 and she became ill before completing her term. Her husband and three children were at her bedside when she died.
Mercy’s body was flown to Kochi and later buried at Ravi’s ancestral home at Vayalar in Alappuzha in the evening.
