The Bangladesh Liberation War led to the independence of East Pakistan.

Bangladesh was created following India's victory in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, after 93,000 Pakistani troops, led by General A A Khan Niazi, surrendered to the Indian Army and 'Mukti Bahini' in Dhaka on December 16. This is said to be the largest military surrender after World War II. The war, which began on December 3, lasted for 13 days.

India showed support to 'Mukti Bahini' — Bengali freedom fighters, by providing arms and weapons and setting up training camps.

On Tuesday, many leaders paid tributes to the Indian armed forces to mark the day.

"On Vijay Diwas, the nation bows in pride and gratitude to the Indian Armed Forces who delivered the decisive victory of 1971. The Army, Navy and Air Force operated in flawless coordination, reshaping history and asserting India’s strategic resolve. Their valour, discipline and combat spirit continue to inspire generations and strengthen our national will," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh posted on X.

On Vijay Diwas, we salute the brave sons of Bharat Mata, whose exceptional courage and supreme sacrifice won India the 1971 war."
