Congress president and chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi met some of the agitators and agreed with them that the government must improve policing and do more to instill a sense of security among women in the capital and rest of the country.

Gandhi came out of her residence late at night on Saturday and met the agitators, who were protesting against the incident in front of the fortified bungalow at 10 Janpath. “I am with you…and justice will be delivered,” she told the protesters after a 20-minute-long meeting with them. She again met a seven-member delegation of the protesters on Sunday and assured them that the case would be fast-tracked to bring the rapists to justice expeditiously.

Party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who was also present, is learnt to have told the young protesters that the “decision-making should be done in a rational manner, not driven by emotions”. He, however, told them that he understood and respected their emotions and asked them to provide practical and rational suggestions to both the Centre and Delhi governments to ensure safety of women.

Minister of State for Home Affairs R P N Singh told journalists later that the delegation had been briefed about the steps that the government had already taken or would take shortly to ensure safety of women as well as to bring the rapists to justice without delay.

“We also noted down their suggestions. We told them there is a need to maintain calm and the government is committed to take all steps,” said Singh.
