Born on September 2, 1952, Meenakshi was an author, a philosopher, an administrator, a child psychologist, a great visionary and a humanitarian – all merged into one. Apart from The Heritage School, the eminent academician was also the head of the Junior Wing of the St. James’ School and attached to the various institutions in her different capacities

Meenakshi was an extraordinary educator who spent over four decades connecting with children and fostering their growth. Her unique ability to become one with her students, allowing them the freedom to express themselves, and understanding their unspoken emotions, made her a beloved figure in their lives. By holding their hands and guiding them through a world of learning, play, dance, music, and excitement, she created a nurturing environment where children can thrive.

Her legacy extends beyond the classroom, as countless students recognise her as their first teacher. This exceptional quality, inherent in a few individuals, is a gift that Meenakshi possessed. “I had the privilege of meeting her in the mid-1980s when she headed the primary department at St. James' School. The school's principal, John Mason, introduced us, and I was struck by her vibrant personality and dedication to her craft,” eminent academician of Kolkata, Gomathy Venkateswar, recalled.

Venkateswar, who headed many reputed schools at home and abroad, went down the memory lane: “Years later, I encountered Meenakshi Atal again in 2004, when she played a pivotal role in shaping The Heritage School's early years as an academic advisor. Her influence on the school's design and growth was evident, particularly in the pre-primary department, which was designed like a ship with child-friendly features. Her commitment to innovative learning methods and kindness towards staff earned her love and respect.”

Meenakshi was born in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, and spent her early years in Lucknow and Kanpur, enjoying a beautiful childhood with her siblings. Her parents, S P Wattal and Satyawati Wattal, instilled strong values in her and her family.

She and Deepak Atal, her husband for 47 years, raised two daughters, Shivani and Pooja, who brought immense joy to her life. As her children started going to school, she embarked on an extraordinary journey as an educator, shaping institutions and inspiring educators over four decades.

“Under her guidance, The Heritage School flourished, eventually becoming the top school in the country, according to the National School Educational Survey Report. Meenakshi’s vision for a green and nurturing environment was realised through the Nature Club, which allowed children to explore and learn from nature,” said Venkateshwar.

Shivani and Pooja, the bereaved daughters of the late academician, said that their mother, better known as Atal Ma'am, had been a beacon of elegance, multi-faceted talent, and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives. Her dignified demeanour, kindness, and generosity had earned her the love and respect of family, friends, colleagues, teachers, and students alike, they said.

Her contributions to education were profound, earning her numerous accolades, including “Out of the Box Thinking” and “Skill-Based Learning”. Her pivotal role in establishing The Heritage School and St. James' School laid strong foundations for value-based education in Kolkata.

Her teaching style was unique, going beyond textbooks to touch hearts. Her expertise spanned curriculum design, school operations, teacher leadership, and inclusive education, with a focus on supporting children with special needs. Her commitment to society was unwavering, serving on the governing bodies of organisations like the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy and We Can Learning Resource Institute.

Beyond her professional brilliance, she was a woman of boundless energy, adventure, and love for the outdoors. She was a passionate educator, supportive friend, skilled cook, talented seamstress, and nurturing presence. Her home was always open, and her heart was full of love for everyone.

Meenakshi Atal leaves behind a living legacy – in the schools she built, the children she mentored and helped grow, and the lives she touched. Her light continues to shine brightly through the love, wisdom, and compassion she gifted to all. “We are deeply proud to have called her mother, and we will cherish her memories forever,” said Shivani and Pooja.
