Kolkata: The parents of the young doctor, who was raped and murdered at a hospital in Kolkata on August 9, met West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Thursday and conveyed dissatisfaction over the probe conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

They also sent a letter to the CBI chief Praveen Sood through the Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, expressing their displeasure over the way the CBI had investigation into the rape and murder of their daughter. The move by the parents of the victims against the CBI came on a day the trial court asked the central investigation agency to explain why it had committed a procedural lapse while conveying the consent of the state government to frame charges against the principal of the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the rape and murder of the young doctor had taken place, in connection with corruption and financial irregularities.

Majumdar, who is also the president of the BJP’s West Bengal unit, met the parents of the victim at their residence on Thursday and assured them that he would convey their grievances against the CBI to the appropriate authorities.

The CBI had taken over the probe into the rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor on August 14, following an order the Calcutta High Court had passed after hearing a petition filed by the victim’s parents, who were not happy with the investigation by the city police.

The CBI, however, accused only Sanjay Roy, whom the Kolkata Police had arrested a day after the body of the doctor was found, and no one else, and the court also convicted him recently. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. But the parents of the victim expressed doubt if such a crime could be committed by a single person. They vowed to continue their “fight for justice” as long as all other culprits would not be brought to book.

The parents of the victim met the governor in the evening and conveyed to him their keenness to meet President Draupadi Murmu and convey to her their dissatisfaction over the probe by the CBI into the rape and murder of their daughter.

Though the state government and the CBI moved the Calcutta High Court, appealing against the trial court’s order and seeking capital punishment of Sanjay Roy, a member of the contractual staff of Kolkata Police, the parents of the victims conveyed to the court that they did not want him to go to the gallows. They told journalists that they opposed the death penalty for the convict as it might end up helping shield the others who were responsible for the crime.
