As part of the ‘Abhaya Memorial Programme’, the rally will begin at College Square and proceed to Shyambazar More, said Aniket Mahata, a representative of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF).

"We will hold a torch rally on the intervening night of August 8-9 for the Abhaya Memorial Programme. After reaching Shyambazar, we will stay there the entire night and press for our demands to know what happened to our sister a year ago," Mahato said.

Accompanied by other junior doctors of the WBJDF, Mahato welcomed people from all walks of society to participate in the rally.

"We will again live the entire night on the streets of the city and press for our demands to know the truth behind the death of Abhaya," he said.

"Today, there is an ongoing practice of the administration to make people forget certain things with time. We will continue till the truth is out… We welcome everybody to participate in this rally," he added.

The rape-murder of a 31-year-old woman doctor on August 9 last year had sparked nationwide outrage and prolonged protests.

In October last year, junior doctors launched an intense movement, including a 17-day fast-unto-death from October 5, demanding accountability, transparency in the investigation.
