The prime accused in the Kolkata gang-rape case, Monojit Mishra, is an alumnus of the Kolkata law school where the incident took place. Nicknamed as 'Mango,' many students, juniors and classmates remember him for his atrocities in his college years.
Having come from an estranged background, Mishra lives alone in Kalighat. His father, a priest, cut off relations with him five years ago. Many of the college-goers mentioned how he had ties with politicians, using it as his shield for committing criminal acts.
According to a Times of India report, Monojit had been accused of molestation, harassment, extortion, and physical assault during his college days. The complaints were lodged to the college authorities, but no action was taken.
He had first joined the college in 2007 but, later dropped out. He then rejoined college in 2017 and completed his graduation in BA LLB in 2022. He was also a part of the college's Trinamool Chhatra Parishad until 2021, when he was removed due to his 'rowdyism.' He returned to the college as a staff member a year later and managed official college groups. He would add and remove people at his will, and would face no consequences.
The female students came forward to say that it was his regular routine to make jokes about their bodies, and they could not do anything about it. From morphing pictures of women, to passing jokes about them, the college authorities were silent throughout. He would ask girls, "Will you marry me?" and that was how the conversation started with the female student on Wednesday too, TOI reported.
An insider of the college told TOI how he would mention nothing would happen to him, because of his political connections. Many of the students came forward stating they were terrified of him. He would shoot videos and take pictures of the women he was with, and would circulate them among his friend groups and chats.
On Wednesday, June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped by Monojit and a two other people at South Kolkata Law College. The accused were arrested following the survivor's complaint. In the backdrop of the August 2024 RG Kar case, the BJP have come forward claiming that the state of West Bengal is unsafe for woman. With BJP president JP Nadda accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government, the two ongoing cases will see their hearings on the scheduled dates for fair trails.
