NDA after a meeting on Sunday announced Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the Vice Presidential elections.
The post of VP got vacant after the surprise exit of Jagdeep Dhankhar.
"CP Radhakrishnan, considered a statesman, commands respect in all sections of society in Tamil Nadu," BJP chief JP Nadda said after the announcement.
"We want next vice president to be elected unanimously, we have reached out to opposition leaders," he added.
Who is CP Radhakrishnan
Radhakrishnan is a two-time MP from Coimbatore and is from the old guard of the BJP having worked under A B Vajpayee and L K Advani.
Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan joined the RSS in the 1970s and became a State Executive Committee Member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1974.
He hails from the dominant Gounder community which former TN BJP chief K Annamalai also belongs to.
He was appointed as Governor in 2023 to make way for leaders like Annamalai, who contested from Coimbatore in 2024.
