Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Tuesday said that the party will work towards strengthening the I.N.D.I.A. bloc to fight the BJP.

"Even as there is lack of clarity in the stands of Congress, in order to fight the BJP, the support of the Congress is also required. Hence efforts would be made to strengthen the I.N.D.I.A. bloc," said Baby, who took over as CPI(M) general secretary on Sunday.

Even while admitting that the BJP was making inroads into the CPI(M)'s strongholds in Kerala, Baby said that BJP won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala in 2024 and an assembly seat in 2016 owing to fall in Congress's votes. He also alleged that many people were getting attracted to BJP with expectations like getting Padma awards.

Baby, who was speaking at a meet the press organised by the Kerala Union of Working Journalists, also said that the CPI(M)'s presence at the national level came down as it failed in effectively conveying its works to the sections like the poor and the unemployed for whom the party stands for.

Baby also reiterated that the allegations against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter's dealing with a controversial mining firm were politically motivated. There was no evidence for any illegal favours that the government gave to the mining firm, he said.
