Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is planning to rename Bengaluru Rural as ‘Bengaluru North’, giving a new identity to the district that houses the Kempegowda International Airport.
The proposal is likely to come up before the Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet atop the Nandi Hills on Wednesday.
The Bengaluru Rural district came into existence in 1986 when the state capital was split into two, the other being Bengaluru Urban.
At present, the Bengaluru Rural district has four Assembly constituencies - Hoskote, Devanahalli, Doddaballapur and Nelamangala.
In May this year, the government renamed the Ramanagara as ‘Bengaluru South’, a proposal pushed by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar who represents the Kanakapura segment in this district.
The government is also considering renaming Bagepalli in Chikkaballapur as ‘Bhagyanagar’.
Bagepalli is close to the Andhra Pradesh border. In November 2020, a grouping of organisations had petitioned the government to rename Bagepalli, which they argued was a Telugu name.
The Cabinet meeting at Nandi Hills is expected to approve several projects worth hundreds of crores for the Kolar and Chikkaballapur regions. The Nandi Hills are located in the Chikkaballapur district.
