Srirangapatna (Mandya): Fire and Emergency Services and Police personnel were successful in rescuing a law student from Bengaluru, who had jumped into Cauvery river for ending her life, and miraculously survived after getting stuck in a tree, in the middle of the river, in Srirangapatna taluk, Mandya district, on Friday morning.
Pavitra (19), a resident of Electronics City, Bengaluru, is the law student, who has been rescued.
According to Police, Pavitra had jumped into Cauvery river near Hangarahalli, to end her life, on Thursday evening. Cauvery river has swollen due to heavy discharge of water from the KRS dam, and Pavitra was washed away for around five kilometres and got stuck in a tree in the middle of the river.
She was sitting on the tree for the whole night. On Friday morning she started screaming for help. Farmers who heard someone shouting 'kaapadi... ' spotted her in the middle of the river, and alerted the police.
A police team, led by PSI N Vinodkumar, and Fire and Emergency services personnel rushed to the spot, rescued her and informed her parents.
It is a miraculous escape for the girl, as she would have been washed away if the water level had increased, police said.
The reason for the suicide attempt is not known.
