The deceased have been identified as Raghavendra Narayan Jadhav (28) and Ranjita Adiveppa Chaubari (25) from Munavalli village in Savadatti taluk.

Family sources said the two were in a long term relationship and they might have died by suicide following parents of Ranjita getting her engaged to another person.

Passersby noticed the abandoned auto rickshaw with the two hanging from the ceiling of the vehicle with a rope and legs folded on Tuesday morning. Police believe that the two might have ended their lives on Monday night.

Speaking to media people, Raghavendra's brother, Somnath said their family was not aware that his brother was in a relationship with the girl.

“As usual on Monday, Raghavendra took his auto rickshaw for work. But he did not return home in the night. On Tuesday morning police informed us about the incident. It is hard for us to believe that he died by suicide,” he said and urged the police to investigate this case from all angles.

Gokak rural police station inspector Kiran Mohite visited the spot and registered a case of unnatural death.
