With over 30 years of teaching experience, including two decades in academic administration, and accolade like the Outstanding Scientist Award to his name, Prof Airani Mohammad Khan is all set to take charge as the new Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University.
He is scheduled to assume office on July 7 (Monday).
On Saturday, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who also serves as the chancellor of all state universities, issued official order appointing Prof Khan to the post.
According to the notification, he has been appointed based on the recommendations of the search committee and will serve for a term of four years or until he attains the age of 67, whichever comes earlier.
Before this appointment, Prof Khan served the Department of Studies and Research in Electronics at Mangalore University, where he was known for his contributions to both research and academic leadership.
The vice-chancellor’s position at Karnatak University had been vacant since the retirement of K B Gudasi. In response, 190 candidates from across the country had applied for the post. A search committee, headed by former vice-chancellor A H Rajasab, shortlisted three names, including Prof Khan.
Prof Khan has also published more than 200 research papers and participated in 10 research projects. His contributions have earned him the Best Teacher Award.
Speaking to DH, Prof Khan said, “Dharwad is my hometown. I completed my primary, secondary, PU, and undergraduate education here, including my BSc in Physics at Karnataka Science College. Later I earned my MSc from Gulbarga University and PhD from Mangalore University. To return as vice-chancellor of my hometown university is a honour. I aim to prioritise technology-driven education, skill development, and the creation of employment opportunities for students.”
