After all, it was only last month that the vegetable hit the headlines for bringing tears in the eyes of both growers and end users.

While the former cried for the pittance they got, the latter had to pay through the nose for the key ingredient in their daily diet. Only wholesale traders and middlemen laughed all the way to the bank.

But the vegetable vendor is sad that the theft has left him poorer by Rs 25,000, which is the profit he makes in two months of business. What stumped Ghani more is the fact that other items kept in the shop were intact.

According to Ghani, he had locked the tin shed where he sells vegetables, before leaving for home on Sunday night. Unidentified persons had gained entry into the shop, by removing a few tins and decamped with the ‘valuables,’ he said.

Onion is presently selling at Rs 60 a kg here and garlic at Rs 300. Based on that, he has estimated the cost of the four bags of onion and garlic. Ghani said he had lodged a complaint with the Gandhi Ganj police station.
