A board was erected by some local residents of Nellankara in Thrissur city naming their residential area as 'Ilangao Nagar' on Saturday. The commissioner asked the police to direct them to remove the board that was kept without permission. He also reportedly said that the police officials were only doing their duties and did not expect such appreciation.

A statement given by the IPS officer to the media after the crackdown on the anti-socials last week had also gone viral. "Goons acted like goons and police acted like police," Ilangao said.

It was during the early hours of June 28 that the police nabbed a group of history-sheeters, including drug peddlers, who attacked some houses in the locality and also attacked a police party.

The gang was having a party at a house in the locality. Some clashes broke out among them which resulted in attacks towards the houses in the locality. After being informed by locals, a police team rushed to the spot.

The gang members attacked the police and went to nearby hideouts. Subsequently a team led by Ilango swung into action. Six gang members were held from the spot using force. This brought much relief to the local people from the accused and hence they came up with the idea of honouring the IPS officer.
