Mumbai: Has the Election Commission become bigger than the Supreme Court and President, asked Shiv Sena (UBT) head and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray while accusing the government and the BJP of protecting the poll body.

Thackeray also praised the efforts of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for exposing the Election Commission. “The opposition's protest is against the Election Commission…it is an independent body…why is the (NDA) government and BJP coming in between…is this something that they want to hide,” Thackeray remarked.

“Has the Election Commission become bigger than the Supreme Court and President,” he said, reacting to the EC seeking an affidavit under an oath from Rahul Gandhi.

TShiv Sena (UBT) leader's observations came after he led a protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai demanding the dismissal of what they called 'tainted and corrupt' ministers.

The protest comes days after NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar and Thackeray, two key leaders of the Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc, claimed that certain individuals have approached them ahead of the 2024 polls for the purpose of manipulation during the elections and securing a win.

Thackeray also asked people across the country to get their names checked in the electoral rolls.

He also slammed the BJP-led Maha Yuti dispensation for shielding the corrupt and controversial  ministers. “I pity (Chief Minister) Devendra Fadnavis…Why is he shielding these corrupt ministers? He does not have the courage to sack them despite the brute majority," Thackeray claimed. "The Mahayuti has relegated Maharashtra to the last position and top position in corruption,” he added.

Thackeray also targeted the Narendra Modi government over Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President and his disappearance.  "Where is the (former) vice president?" Thackeray asked.
