Mumbai: Academician, thinker and journalist Dr Deepak Tilak, the great-grandson of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, passed away in Pune on Wednesday. He was 78 and died of old-age issues.

Tilak was respected in academic and journalistic circles for upholding the legacy of the nationalist thinker and social reformer Lokmanya Tilak, the firebrand revolutionary freedom fighter.

Dr Tilak had served as Vice Chancellor at Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth of Pune besides being the trustee editor of Kesari, a Marathi newspaper.

Dr Tilak was also the President and Trustee of Tilak Smarak Trust which promotes social and political service to the citizens.

Kesari was founded on January 4, 1881 and it has played a significant role in the freedom movement and social reforms.

Dr Tilak is son of late Jayantrao Tilak, who spearheaded Goa Liberation Movement and Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and had been the Chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council.
