The Congress-backed National Student Union of India (NSUI) won the top two positions of the Delhi University student polls, dealing further blow to the rival BJP’s Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

NSUI candidates won the president and vice president positions after a gap of four years in the DU Students Union polls, results for which were declared on Wednesday.

Though the ABVP won the secretary and joint secretary positions, it is a setback for the student body as they held the top three positions for the past three years. The NSUI, however, contested the results of the joint secretary post, alleging that the poll had been tampered. They threatened to approach the Delhi High Court if the varsity poll panel did not do the recount.

“In the name of recounting @HRDMinistry  & RSS pressuring DU administration to manipulate the results, we’ll not let this happen. #NSUIwinsDU. We’ll definitely fight for transparency in DUSU results & not let RSS to take over the student’s mandate,” the NSUI tweeted.

The NSUI’s Rocky Tuseed won the DUSU president’s elections, defeating ABVP’s candidate Rajat Choudhary by over 1,500 votes. The organisation’s Kunal Sherawat won the vice president’s election 175 votes.

The ABVP’s Mahamedha Nagar won the election to DUSU’s secretary position, while Uma Shankar of the same organisation won the joint Secretary’s post.

Meeting with Rahul

The victorious NSUI candidates later met Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

“Congratulations @nsui on a stellar performance & Pres win in DUSU! Thank students of DU for reposing faith in Congress ideology #NSUIWinsDU,” Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

The result is a further setback to ABVP that suffered a drubbing in the hands of the united Left alliance that won all the four top positions in the recent Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student union polls.

“It’s disappointing to lose (the top two) seats in the DUSU polls, but we have maintained our support base in DU and our vote share  did not drop,” ABVP’s national media convener Saket Bahuguna said.
