Are you a ‘certified plant killer’? Well, you are not alone! A large number of people have proudly brought home a leafy friend at some point in life, only to watch it droop, brown and silently fade. But growing plants indoors doesn’t have to be intimidating. There are several undemanding, easy-to-care-for plants that you can start with and grow your collection. We spoke to a few passionate green thumbs who listed these out to help you turn your home into a thriving green oasis, one low-maintenance plant at a time.
Pothos (Money Plant) The first plant that come to most people’s minds at the mention of indoor plants Pothos or Money Plant doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket. It is easy to grow in both water and soil and is available in several varieties such as emerald neon and marble. “Pothos is a beginner’s best friend. You can pot them in ceramic planters hanging baskets or even decorative jars. They adapt well to low light so you can place them on bookshelves TV stands or even darker corners of your home. They are great air purifiers” says Meghana Ramachandra a content writer from Bengaluru. Care tip: If the potting mix contains more coco peat reduce the watering frequency.
Sansevieria (Snake Plant) “One of the best indoor plants for beginners is the Sansevieria or Snake Plant” says Sadhna Sahu a Nagpur-based former educator. “The snake plant is nearly indestructible. It tolerates low light and needs very little watering. Stylish and sculptural it’s perfect for bedrooms and bathrooms”. Care tip: Use well-draining soil and don’t over-water.
Lucky Canna and Velvet “All these plants work very well in water” says Soni Kumari Rana a Meerut-based chef. “However change the water once a week for healthy growth and wash the pot well too” she advises. Adds Meghana “Philodendron comes in many varieties and some of my favourite types include Philodendron Xanadu Golden Goddess Burle Marx and Florida Ghost. These grow rapidly and love bright indirect light.” Care tip: Every time you change the water clean the roots and check for any signs of decay.
Tillandsia (Air Plant) Also known as Air Plant Tillandsia resembles a tiny pineapple and as the term Air Plant suggests doesn’t require soil water or fertiliser. “Just air and occasional moisture would do. You can get creative with how you display it - place it in cute pots arrange it on pebbles or showcase it in glass containers on your shelf or work desk” advises Meghana. Care tip: Soak it in water for 10–15 seconds once every two weeks. Place it where it gets a few hours of sunlight daily and you’re good to go.
Areca Palm There is something instantly calming about the Areca Palm believe plant-lovers. With its soft flowing leaves and golden-green colour it brings a breezy charm to any room - no fuss just an easy touch of Nature. “Place it by a sunny window or in a quiet corner. Either way it makes your home feel fresh and alive. As always Nature never goes out of style” says Sadhana. Care tip: Mist the leaves occasionally to keep them hydrated and happy in the dry indoor air.
Pachira Aquatica (Money Tree) Popular for its braided trunk this plant also symbolises good luck and prosperity due to which it is often used in Feng Shui practices. “It’s a great addition to large living rooms and is known for improving indoor air quality and requires very little maintenance. However keep in mind that it can grow up to six feet tall indoors” says Meghana.
Pothos (Money Plant) Tough low-maintenance and full of character cacti are ideal for anyone who wants greenery without the fuss. They thrive on neglect love the sun and add a sculptural edge to any space. “Cactus is my ultimate no-brainer plant” says Soni Kumari. Care tip: Place in a bright spot with at least a few hours of direct sunlight and water just once every two to three weeks.
