On May 8, the Roman Catholic Church was blessed with a new leader: Pope Leo XIV. A member of the Augustinian order with decades of missionary service in Peru, Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis and carries the distinct honour of being the first American ever to ascend to the papacy.

From the moment his name was announced, Pope Leo XIV captured the world’s attention with his gentle demeanour, profound humility, and a life that exemplifies faithful service. Almost immediately, the digital world lit up. In several WhatsApp groups I’m part of, people eagerly shared biographies, childhood anecdotes, reflections on his missionary work, and video links chronicling his spiritual journey. YouTube was filled with interviews, documentaries, and commentaries celebrating the man who now leads the global Church.

As I followed the surge of information, I found myself moved and deeply touched by the authenticity and simplicity of his life. His holiness wasn’t wrapped in grandeur but rather revealed in small acts of kindness, tireless service, and a deep love for the poor and marginalised.

I found myself asking, What can I learn from his life and papacy? The answer that emerged was inspiring, offering me deep spiritual direction.

I learned that discerning God’s will was and continues to be at the heart of Pope Leo XIV. He recognised God’s call early in his youth. Remarkably, he left home in the eighth grade to enter the seminary. This decision shows a rare sense of purpose and deep spiritual awareness for someone so young. Yet again, from that moment, his life has been a continuous response to God’s invitation, marked by sacrifice, love and service.

His story reminded me that discernment isn’t a one-time decision but a lifelong journey of listening to God’s voice and responding with faith. It underlined the worth of seeking God’s will more intentionally and following His guidance in all areas of life. Above all, it deepened my understanding of the profound importance of continually surrendering to God’s will.

In Pope Leo XIV, we are given a leader who is a living witness to a life fully devoted to God. His papacy serves as a powerful inspiration for all who strive to live with purpose, guided by God’s will and marked by humility and love.
