As we embark upon yet another new year with fear of where the world is heading to, our hearts beat with optimism and prayers for all.

Samastah lokah sukhino bhavantu is a timeless Sanskrit mantra. Its meaning - May all beings in the entire world be happy  – is vast, inclusive and relevant in today’s interconnected world.

This ancient prayer reflects the core philosophy of universal compassion, reminding us that true peace and happiness cannot be isolated or individualistic, but must encompass all forms of life. No life is an island.

This plea dissolves all boundaries—of status, gender, nation, religion, species, and ideology. It does not pray for the happiness of one person, group, or even humanity alone, but for all beings everywhere. This expansive vision does not prioritise personal gain over collective good. By invoking the well-being of the entire universe, the mantra stresses on empathy, humility, and responsibility.

In a world marked by conflict, inequality and emotional distress, this mantra offers a powerful ethical compass.  It acts like a prayer — guiding us to make choices that consider the welfare of others on the planet.

Spiritually, the mantra aligns with the idea that all life is interdependent. The happiness of one is inseparable from the happiness of all; much in the same way as one person’s suffering affects the whole family and disrupts its peace. This reminds us of another popular Sanskrit phrase in the Maha Upanishad – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family. It reflects universal unity, inter-connectedness and brotherhood. This perspective is echoed in many global ancient philosophies, religious doctrines and modern ideologies, where collective well-being is seen as essential for overall harmony.

On a personal level, chanting or reflecting on Samastah lokah sukhino bhavantu nurtures inner peace. By wishing well for others, one releases negativity, resentment, and fear.  It reminds us that benevolence multiplies with caring and sharing and that true fulfilment arises from contributing to the welfare of others.  In embracing its message, humanity takes a big step towards collective healing, mutual respect, and enduring peace.

The mantra urges individuals and societies alike to act with awareness—recognising that every action, however small, ripples outward and affects the larger web of life. When embraced in daily living, it inspires practices of kindness, non-violence, inclusivity and peaceful co-existence.
