Your well-being matters, and when you take time to nurture yourself, you foster a life of vibrancy, balance, and joy—one that radiates outward, positively impacting everything and everyone in your life.

The urban clamour; media and marketing propagates self-care as a new mantra, a new priority, pointing towards ‘detoxing’, pampering ourselves with spa days or indulging in shopping sprees. Thus, we forget that self care is about tending to our deepest needs, a way to honour what we require, and when, to reclaim our peace of mind.

My father tends to plants with such patience, warmth and care that to a bystander it might seem like he is deep in conversation with them. Even though he gets tired, he feels rejuvenated, satisfied and at balance with himself after these escapades.

During a particularly sorrowful time, my mother- in- law took to painting as a way to let go of her grief. She was able to etch her pain in paper, in wood, in whatever medium she could find to slowly regain her perspective.

Although it takes a lot of time and effort, I feel particularly happy and restored when I’ve fed my family a good healthy meal. It calms my mind, makes me smile inwardly and helps me regain my equilibrium and purpose when everything around me seems chaotic. I also know people who go to great lengths to maintain their physical fitness as they see physical fitness and beauty as a way to emotional wellness and mental poise.

The heart of the matter is, self-care is just as individualistic as we are. To some it might look like taking a nap, eating nourishing food, sharing vulnerabilities, or stepping away from social media. To others it could look like curling up with a good book, allowing oneself a moment of stillness; meditation, journalling, visiting the spa or simply breathing deeply in the middle of a chaotic day.

Self-care isn’t a destination or a one-off thing, it’s a lifelong connection. And only you get to decide what makes you feel good and restored. Ignore the cacophony of sounds dictating to you how you must prioritise yourself or what self care should look like. Follow your heart, it knows.

It knows that you and you are a relationship that nurtures every other relationship in your life.
