The Crossword puzzle usually mentions the clue ‘sound sleep’ The answer expected is snoring. Apart from crossword puzzle the phenomena of snoring comes in our lives on many different occasions. In my own case my wife rudely shakes me awake. When I ask what the matter is she says “Why are you snoring so loudly?” It is an interesting thing that the person who snores is hardly aware of the noise he generates.

Snoring is closely connected with talking in ones sleep and perhaps walking in ones sleep also. Once a lady took her husband to the doctor and requested the doctor to please see that her husband stopped his sleep talking. The doctor said that medical science has not found a way to stop people from talking in their sleep “In that case” said the wife, “Please make him talk louder so that I can at least know what he is talking about”. Another woman had a similar problem with her husband. She took her husband to the doctor and requested him to see that the man stops talking in sleep. The doctor was a kind person. He said. “Why don’t you allow him to talk at least during his sleeping hours?”

Medical research shows that more men snore than women. The louder a person snores the greater will be his problem apart from the problem created by him to his partner. It is said the if a snorer’s wife leaves the bedroom it is normal snoring but if the neighbours move out then it is heavy snoring. One of the worst problems connected with snoring is what is known as sleep apnea. 

The person literally stops breathing. Those most prone to sleep apnea are overweight middle-aged men. If one of us belong to the category and we snore pretty loudly the chances of our having sleep apnea are high. It would be necessary to see a doctor. Sleep apnea can be controlled by wearing a device which forces air under pressure into the nose. In severe cases surgery may be required. 

The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies offers a few suggestions for snorers to get rid of the habit. 1 Stop smoking. Smokers tend to be snorers. 2 When sleeping sleep on your side. Avoid sleeping on the back. Most people snore when they are on their backs. 3 Sew a tennis ball at the back of the pajamas. That way when you roll over on your back you hit this hard object and unconsciously roll off your back. 4 Raise the bed; it can minimize snoring. Elevate the upper torso not just the head. 5 Sneezing and snoring go together. Use a nasal decongestant. 6 Put a plug in it.

When all else fails the person at the receiving end can put earplugs which are cheap and are easily available. The search goes on for a sure cure fro snoring. The snorer cannot hear his own snoring but there are many ways to make the snorer to stop. Research has already found out about 300 methods for dealing with and controlling snoring.
