Last month, Tesla, in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, announced that it bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin. Elon Musk-owned EV maker did say, it will soon start transacting in digital currency with its customers.
As it happens, Musk on Wednesday (March 24) formally announced on Twitter that consumers can now buy Tesla cars with Bitcoin.
Musk added that the company operates the Bitcoin nodes directly and will use only its internal and open-source software to complete the transaction.
"Bitcoin paid to Tesla will be retained as Bitcoin, not converted to fiat currency," Musk noted.
For now, only US customers will be able to buy Tesla vehicles with bitcoin and the company will expand this service to other global markets a little later.
As per the latest currency exchange rate, one bitcoin is now worth $55,419 (approx Rs 40,26,427).
Tesla sells multiple variants-- Model S,3,X,Y-- with prices ranging from $42,000 to $124,000.
With 1 Bitcoin, consumers can buy the Model Y Performance model with additional accessories and service.
