12-year-old Jayaveena wins silver; swimmers set new records

The day also saw two big upsets when Asian Games bronze medalist Virdhawal Khade faltered in the 200m butterfly to settle for a silver, while Richa Mishra aiming for her seventh gold returned empty-handed in the 50m breastroke, where Jayaveena hogged the limelight.

Daughter of noted Tamil actor Vijay Kumar, Jayaveena, a class VII student, claimed a silver medal when she finished behind Maharashtra's Poorva Shetye who touched the pad with a record timing of 35.74.

Maharashtra also bagged the bronze through Monioque Gandhi (37.17).Poorva's timing broke the nine-year-old record held by Saba Sait (36.06), even as all eyes at the Veer Budhu Bhagat Aquatic Stadium in Mega Sports Complex here were on the baby swimmer in the star-studded field that also had three national record holder Richa Mishra.
For golden girl Richa, who is participaing in all 17 individual events, this was her first failure as she finished a disappointing fifth.

The ace swimmer settled for only one gold medal that she won in the 200m butterfly with a timing of 2:24.45 to make it seven overall; she also has a silver medal.

Karnataka's Pooja Alva (02:25.72) and Maharashtra's Rujuta Bhatt (02:29.23) bagged the silver and bronze respectively in the 200m butterfly.

Continuing their glorious team run, Karnataka's men's and relay teams won two gold medals with record timings, while international swimmer Sandeep Sejwal set the fourth meet record of the day.

Poster boy of Indian swimming Khade was left heart broken when he lost out to Vishnu K M of services by a fraction of second for the gold medal. Vishnu stopped the clock at 02:10.34, while Khade was 02:10.65.
Delhi's Tarun Tokas bagged the bronze with a timing of 02:11.70.
Karanataka's men's relay team of Gagan A P, Arjun J P, Ashwin Menon and Rohit Havaldar shattered the four year old record (08:09.80) when they finished with a time of 08.09:80 for the 4x200m freestyle gold.
Maharashtra bagged the silver (08:17.09), while Services Sports Control Board took the bronze with a timing of 08:21.35

Meanwhile, Richa's hopes of making a hat-trick today was dashed in the 50m freestyle as Talasha lived up to her reputation in the sprint to claim the gold, clocking 27:95.
Richa clocked 28:22 for the silver, while A V Jayaveena of Tamil Nadu clinched the bronze with 28:66.

Asian Games bronze medalist Khade had no problem winning the 50m freestyle as the Kolhapur boy clocked 23:08 en route to his third gold.

In the morning session heats, the 19-year-old had bettered his four year old record (23:92) putting up a timing of 23:81.

Arjun J P of Karnataka bagged the silver stopping the clock at 24:65, while Anshul Kothari (24:96) took home the bronze.

Showing a lot of promise, 19-year-old Karnataka youngster Gagan smashed Rehan Poncha's four year old record (04.44:32) with a superb timing of 04.40:08 in the 400m individual medley to start the proceedings in swimming.

Delhi bagged the silver through Merwyn Chen who clocked 04.46:56, while national record holder Sandeep Sejwal representing Madhya Pradesh won the bronze with a timing of 04.51:89.

In diving, Maharashtra clinched the gold through Hrutika Shriram, who logged 200.95 in the high board en route to the gold, while her statemate Jagruti Satarakar logged 159.50.Bengal's Tanuka Dhara bagged the bronze with 153.45
