The inaugural Karnataka Badminton League (KBL) might have ended successfully for Flypower Warriors but the players and management staff of the triumphant team are yet to receive their dues, prompting them to file a complaint with the Karnataka Badminton Association.
Even two months after the completion of KBL, Warriors’ shuttlers, coaches and other team officials haven’t received their payment from the Global Overseas Company that bought the franchisee for 2.5 lakh and the players for a total purse of Rs 2.9 lakh.
Flypower Warriors had won Rs five lakh in prize money. “We are helpless. We have complained to the KBA,” said Vasanth Kumar, the coach of Flypower Warriors. However, Robin Chaudhary, owner of the team, told Deccan Herald that the cheques for the players had been couriered a couple of days ago.
On their part, KBA has written to Sports Excellency, the company responsible for running the KBL for three editions, stating that unless the players’ demands are met they won’t be allowed to conduct the second edition of the league.
‘Cheques sent’
“We have written to Sports Excellence to look into the matter. A week ago, we received scanned copies of the cheques. But we understand that the players have not got the money. The players must get the money. We will not permit them to conduct the second edition unless this is settled,” said KBA secretary NC Sudhir.
However, KBL organising secretary Vijay Lancy said Chaudhary has sent the cheques. “Chaudhary has told us that he has sent the cheques. He has also sent us scanned copies of the cheques.
“The situation is unfortunate for the players, especially because they are from the winning team.
Players can expect to be paid in a couple of days or so. We will have a better mechanism for remuneration next year.”
