England lost four wickets for 19 runs in the second session to slump to 197-6 at tea on day three of the day-night second Ashes test against Australia on Saturday.

After a wicketless opening session, England suffered a collapse and still need 77 runs to avoid follow-on in their reply to Australia's first innings total of 473-9 declared at the Adelaide Oval.

Ben Stokes was batting on 12 at the break and Chris Woakes on 23 with England still 276 behind.

After England resumed their battle to stay alive in the contest, skipper Joe Root and Dawid Malan brought up individual fifties forging a 138-run stand in the process.\

Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon was enjoying a sunny 26 degrees Celsius, and the Australian attack, missing Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, appeared to lack the zest necessary to break through.

It looked so promising for England when Root and Malan guided England to 140-2 at the dinner break.

Cameron Green broke the stand when he had Root, who made 62, caught by Australia's stand-in skipper Steve Smith at first slip.

It was a ball Root could have left and the England captain was furious with himself as he walked off after falling short again of his first century in Australia.

It soon got worse for England as Malan, who made 80, slashed a Mitchell Starc delivery that he should have left with Smith taking that catch too.

Ollie Pope (five) survived a review but squeezed a Nathan Lyon delivery to Marnus Labuschagne fielding close in and, moments later, Jos Buttler fell for a duck to Starc.
