India came close on two occasions but finished runners-up, losing the finals to Australia and England.
Ranked world No.3, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will look to make the most of their familiarity with conditions in the the tournament, that is returning to India after 12 years.
"We were looking to bowl as well. Looks (pitch) very good, hopefully we will put up a good score. Everyone is fit, we are going in with three spinners and two pacers," said Harmanpreet at the toss.
India are eyeing their maiden title in the global showpiece event.
"I am pretty confident about my bowling unit so we are bowling first. It is a good batting track but there could be some dew later on. We are going with seven batters," said Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu.
