London: India reached 44 for 1 at tea on day two in reply to England’s 387 in the third Test here on Friday.
KL Rahul looked solid on 13 in company with his Karnataka teammate Karun Nair, who was on 18 as the duo steadied India’s reply after young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal for 13 in the second over.
The left-hander gave India a brisk start with three boundaries off Chris Woakes but fell for 13 to Jofra Archer, who struck with his third ball on his Test comeback after four years.
Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah bagged his second successive five-wicket haul (5/74) of the series but Jamie Smith (51) and Brydon Carse (56) staged a lower-order fightback to lift England to 387.
Brief Scores:
England 1st Innings: 387 all out (Root 104, Carse 56, Smith 51; Jasprit Bumrah 5/74). India 1st Innings: 44/1; 14 overs.
