With the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, David Warner, Steve Smith, Pat Cummins and more ready to take the field, it's truly a 'Super Sunday' for any cricket fan!

India vs Australia Full Squads:

India CWC 2023 Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Suryakumar Yadav, Shardul Thakur and Shubman Gill.

Australia CWC 2023 Squad: David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (WK), Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis.

There are a bunch of records that could be broken within the Indian team during the World Cup

For starters Shubman Gill needs just 665 runs to become the highest run-scorer in an ODI calendar year, as he would grab the record held by the Master Blaster himself Sachin Tendulkar (1,894)

Check out all the other records that could be broken here.

Team talk!

India: Though Rohit, not unlike head coach Rahul Dravid, didn't completely rule out Shubman Gill from the opener, in all probability Ishan Kishan would walk out with the skipper himself to open India's innings. Kishan is a proven batter at the top of the order with the fastest double ton in ODIs under his belt. While India would have preferred to go with an in-form Gill, the Jharkhand batter provides the left-hand variety to the 11 which is otherwise predominantly right-handed.

While Shreyas Iyer is the favourite to occupy the fifth batters' slot, Suryakumar Yadav gives India another option should India find the conditions to his liking.

Australia: For the Aussies it might be a "touch and go" situation insofar as Marcus Stoinis is concerned, but Pat Cummins still has a luxury of leaning onto the services of a fair few all-rounders in Mitchell March, Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green with the skipper himself being no mug with the bat. Marsh, especially, has been in prime form. His power hitting can throw any attack out of its depth and the right-hander has shown that quality both against South Africa and India in the run up to the World Cup.

Talking of power-hitting, only England can rival Australia in this aspect. In David Warner, Maxwell, Green and Stoinis (if fit), Aussies pack a lot of firepower in batting and it will take a combination of extraordinary skill and character to keep them in check. One drawback for Aussies is, if Stonis fails to pass the fitness test, they will have only 13 players to pick from as they have stuck to Travis Head, who is expected to be available only midway through the tournament.

A close-up of the Chepauk surface courtesy DK! Jadeja, Ashwin & Kuldeep will be licking their lips looking at this...

Toss update: Pat Cummins wins the toss and opts to bat!

Pat Cummins thinks it's a good surface for batting

We'll bat first, looks like a good wicket. Sun is out, good opportunity to bat. We are in a good spot, we've played a lot over the last month. Travis Head isn't here, (Sean) Abbott, (Marcus) Stoinis and Josh Inglis miss out.
Pat Cummins (Australia Captain)

Rohit Sharma reckons there's turn on offer here

The conditions are there for the bowlers and the ball will turn as the game goes on, you need to understand what line and lengths to bowl and adjust accordingly. We played a lot of cricket before that, we played two good series before the warm up games, we have covered all bases. Unfortunately he (Shubman Gill) didn't recover in time, we waited till today morning and he couldn't recover. Ishan comes in to replace him, he will open the batting.
Rohit Sharma (India Captain)

The Chepauk is buzzing with excitement!

Pitch Report - M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

It will be a slowish surface, might be two paced and just looking at the color, much darker on one side and lighter on the other. I have seen Chennai pitches being harder and flatter, but this will be a little bit on the slower side, if you bowl back of a length and don't give pace then it won't be easy. I would be tempted to play three spinners. I wouldn't be surprised if Australia are thinking in that fashion. Don't underestimate Zampa.
Ravi Shastri

Jasprit Bumrah is raring to go!

Speaking to the broadcasters Bumrah said, "Body feels good. You miss the feeling of contributing to the team so excited for the tournament. We are one of the few lucky ones to play a home World Cup. Australia will make for cracking competition. Feeling is relaxed because we've played a lot of cricket recently. We were fresh and trained even when there wasn't any warm-up game. Will try to enjoy the occasion because in a big tournament you tend to overthink and go beyond the situation. It will be a little hot."

Rohit will be heavily relying on him to get India the early breakthrough.

The teams take the field for the national anthems!

Well folks, we're just moments away from seeing the Men in Blue kick off their World Cup campaign. Will they be able to topple the mighty Aussies? Stay glued to our page for all the action.

David Warner and Mitchell Marsh make their way out to the middle to open the innings for Australia.

Unsurprisingly, it's Jasprit Bumrah who is busy marking his run-up for the first over.

Over 1: Australia 1/0

0.6 - No run, good first over from Bumrah as just the one run comes off it.

2.4 - No run, again some extra bounce for Bumrah but Smith blocks it.

2.3 - No run, India have two slips for Smith who defends safely to cover.

Steven Smith, right handed bat, comes out to the crease.

2.2 - WICKET! Mitchell Marsh c Kohli b Bumrah 0 (6)

Boom boom Bumrah!!! Excellent from Bumrah as he gets some extra bounce that flies off the outside edge towards slip where Kohli dives across and takes a superb two-handed catch. Marsh had no choice but to play at that delivery and ends up walking back on a duck!

Just the start that India would've hoped for.

2.1 - No run, Marsh safely defends as Bumrah attacks the stumps.

Over 4: Australia 11/1

There's a pause in play as the Hardik hurt the tip of his finger on the right hand with that effort and the Physio comes out. He seems okay to continue but needs a bit of strapping on that finger.

Maybe, India missed a trick with that bowling change as Bumrah could've capitalised on that good over by Siraj.

6.2 - FOUR! Full onto the stumps and Warner meets it with a superb drive straight down the ground. Hardik gets a hand to it but can't stop the ball racing to the boundary.

'Local' lad Jadeja says India just need to keep it simple now

I play for CSK so I know the conditions here, when I saw the pitch I thought I should get 2-3 wickets, luckily I got 3 wickets and am very happy. I was looking to bowl into the stumps and there was turn, you never know which one is going straight and which one is turning, the odd ball was turning and I was just mixing the pace. Chennai crowd always come in good numbers and it is good to see a full house. Just go out there and play simple cricket, not try anything fancy and keep it simple.

India win by 6 wickets!

What a batting performance from KL Rahul (97* off 115 balls) and Virat Kohli (85 off 116 balls) to rescue India from a tight spot tonight!

The first three batters departed on Ducks but Kohli and Rahul stitched together a solid 165-run partnership to put the result beyond doubt.

India were superb in the field, with the ball and then after an early batting wobble their stalwarts stood up and made sure there weren't any other hiccups with the bat.

Rahul Dravid will be happy with that performance as India make a dominant start to their home World Cup campaign.

Player of the Match - KL Rahul (97* off 115 balls)

(On walking out so early at 2/3) Quite honestly not a lot of conversation, I thought I’d get a good shower and get a break. I was just trying to get my breath back. Virat said there’s a bit in the wicket, so play like Test cricket for a while. There was a bit of help for the pacers with the new ball, and then the spinners also. In the last 15-20 overs, dew played a part and that helped quite a bit. The ball also skidded on better. However, it was a bit two-paced, it wasn’t the easiest of wickets to bat on and it wasn’t flat as well. It was a good cricket wicket, bit for the batters and the bowlers. That’s what you get in the south of India, especially Chennai. (On his reaction after the last six) I hit it too well, I just calculated how to get to a 100 in the end. The only way for 4 and a six, but no qualms on not getting to that hundred.
KL Rahul

Pat Cummins doesn't want to dwell too long on this loss

(How far short was the score?) Atleast 50 odd. Tough trying to defend 200. (Challenges of batting?) Really good bowling attack. And facing spinners was tough. Was the kind of wicket you had to get yourself in. (Kohli drop) I've already forgotten about it! Not ideal, especially for his calibre. Four down for 10 would've been amazing but wasn't to be. (Hazlewood) Always poses questions with the ball. (What to tell the team before next game?) Have to have a review. Obviously a tough surface. It's just one game out of nine, no need to dwell over that. No regrets [about toss.]
Pat Cummins (Australia Captain)

Rohit Sharma is quite pleased with his team's all-round effort

Good feeling to come out on top. (Bowling and fielding) Magnificent. Especially the fielding. The fielding was something we really put our effort on. It was a great effort. In conditions like this it can be tough sometimes. We knew there would be assistance for everyone. Seamers got reverse, spinners bowled in nice areas. All in all a great effort. (Nervous at 3 for 2?) Yes I was to be honest. You don't want to start like that when chasing a target. Credit to Australia, but some loose shots there as well. But that happens, you want to get off the mark and score quickly in the powerplay. Hats off to Virat and KL - the way they stuck out there to create a match-winning partnership. (Adapting to next surface?) That will be the biggest challenge moving forward because we will play in different conditions. Might have to change combinations too and as a team we are prepared to do that. (Crowd) Chennai never disappoints. Crowd was brilliant from word go. For them to sitting in the heat and cheering says a lot.
Rohit Sharma (India Captain)

Well that's it from me for tonight. All Indian can be happy with that performance and now mark days to their next outing when they'll take the field against Pakistan on October 14.

Meanwhile, join us again tomorrow for all the action from New Zealand vs Netherlands starting at 2 PM.

Till then it's goodbye and goodnight!
