Pace ace Jasprit Bumrah returned with a five-wicket haul as England, who rode on a 37th Test hundred by Joe Root were all out for 387 on the second day of the third Test at Lord's on Friday.
The five-match series is tied one-all after India bounced back to win the second Test at Edgbaston by 336 runs.
Resuming at their overnight score of on 251 for four, England slipped to 271 for seven as Bumrah dismissed captain Ben Stokes, century-maker Root and all-rounder Chris Woakes.
But England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith kept India at bay with a brisk 51, putting on a valuable 84-run stand for the eighth wicket with Brydon Carse, who notched a maiden Test fifty en route to scoring 56.
Their partnership helped England recover from Bumrah's burst and reach a strong position at lunch.
Smith eventually edged Mohammed Siraj behind soon after the break, while Bumrah cleaned up Jofra Archer to complete his second fifer in as many Tests. For the records, it was his 15th five-wicket haul overall, and first at Lord's.
