Bengaluru: Amid deepening military conflict between India and Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was left with little choice other than postponing the tournament for a week.

While the one week’s time will allow the BCCI to reschedule the remainder of the league, possibly in southern and eastern venues, the resumption of the league depends solely on the de-escalation of the armed conflict between India and Pakistan.

In case there is no favourable atmosphere to resume the league and conclude in the regular window, speculation is that the remainder of the tournament may be held in the window to be carved out between August end and the beginning of September, possibly at the cost of rescheduling the white-ball series against Bangladesh, and/or the scrapping of the Asia Cup, which is to be hosted by India.

Foreign players

But then foreign players’ availability could be an issue for most of the franchises during that period.

The apprehension of players, particularly from overseas, also played a big role in the Indian Board putting a temporary halt to the tournament. Most of the foreign players are here with their families, and their concerns couldn’t have been overlooked.

“The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans; while the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders,” the BCCI stated.

Besides the concerns and logistics of rescheduling, the optics were also crucial for BCCI. It would have badly damaged the Board’s image had it continued with the matches while armed forces and people on the border are risking their lives.

“At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces and the people of our country. The Board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor continue to protect and inspire the nation, as they led a resolute response to the recent terrorist attack and the unwarranted aggression by Pakistan’s armed forces.

“While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country. The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation,” the statement read.
