After Jay Shah, another Indian is set to find himself in one of the leading positions of world cricket—as the chief executive officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Sanjog Gupta, who currently heads the live sports vertical at JioStar, has been contacted by the governing body of world cricket to replace Geoff Allardice as its CEO when the latter, who is currently serving his notice period, vacates the chair come July, as per a report by The Guardian.
If selected for the job, Gupta will get to work again with ICC Chairman Jay Shah, with who he has had a working relationship in the past as well.
Who is Sanjog Gupta?
Sanjog Gupta is currently the CEO - Sports & Live Experiences, JioStar.
He has a BA in Economics from the Delhi University.
Gupta began his career as a journalist. starting as a correspondent for The Tribune before moving to TV Today Network as a producer-anchor-correspondent.
He was Associate Executive Producer at Star News India (now ABP News) in 2007, before joining NDTV as a News Editor.
Gupta was then an anchor for INTV, after which he joined Star Movies & BBC World Service Trust as a consultant/producer.
His journey for Star TV began in 2010, where he worked his way up through the ranks to become the network's CEO of Sports.
When Jiostar began its operations, Gupta was made the CEO of its sports vertical.
Challenges in front of the new ICC CEO
The new ICC CEO will have to deal with a cricketing world where international cricket is contantly jostling for space amid a barrage of domestic T20 leagues. With BCCI's cash cow IPL set to expand to 94 matches from 74 by 2028, the challenge will only exacerbate.
He would also have to renegotiate a deal with JioStar if India refuses to play Pakistan even in international tournaments in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attacks.
Another challenge will be reshaping the existing structure of the World Test Championship, which will however, continue to roll as per existing norms till the end of the 2025-27 cycle.
