The former Peruvian international, considered one of the finest South American players of his generation, was admitted to hospital earlier this month due to illness.

Sotil, who made his professional debut at Deportivo Municipal, joined Barcelona in 1973 and won the league title in his maiden campaign.

"Farewell to Hugo 'Cholo' Sotil, one of the best South American players of his era, and one of the fan favourites at Barca during his time at the club," Barcelona posted on social media.

Sotil, who won 62 caps for his country, was part of the national team that won the 1975 Copa America where the Peruvian scored the only goal in the final against Colombia.
