The quake struck at 7:28 am (0158 IST) and was centred 36 kilometres north west of Gizo, Solomon Islands at a depth of five kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons in April 2007 triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
