Swimmers from Manipur began their campaign on a bang by grabbing as many as four gold medals while Karnataka clinched two yellow metals on the opening day of the 41st Sub-Junior National Aquatics Championships here on Monday.

Koijam Athoiba Singh (200m freestyle, 100m butterfly), Hemanshu Nahakpam (200m medley) and Maisnam Arindham Singh (100m breaststroke) finished first in their respective races in the boys' Group III category at the Basavangudi Aquatic Centre. 

For the hosts, Shwiti Diwakar Suvarana touched the pad in 1:10.19 to top the podium in the girls' Group III 100m butterfly event ahead of state-mate Arohi Chitragar (1:11.95) and Gujarat's Hiranshi Vikramsingh (1:13.43) in second and third positions respectively. 

Later, Shwiti teamed-up with Nyra Bopanna Kalengada, Prapthi JP and Stuti Singh to win Karnataka's second gold of the day in the Group III section 200m freestyle relay. 

At the waterpolo competition in Kensington Swimming Pool, Karnataka men posted a dominating 11-3 win over Manipur while their women counterparts defeated Tamil Nadu 8-1.

Dhakshan betters own NR 

Chasing both gold and the time, Karnataka’s Dhakshan S managed to top the podium while breaking his own record in the boys’ Group I  200m freestyle race at the 51st Junior National Aquatic Championship that kicked off in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Dhakshan set a new mark of 1:52.20 to erase his previous time of 1:52.87. His state-mate Aryan Kailas Bhattbhatt (1:56.19) and Maharashtra’s Om Pravin Satam (1:56.34) claimed the silver and bronze respectively.
